Microsoft Office Online Viewer Extension

The “Open with Microsoft Office Online Viewer” extension for Google Chrome browser enables users to easily open online and public Office format files (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) using Microsoft’s Office Online tool. This extensions works with Chrome on Windows, Linux and Mac.

Similar to the Google Drive Viewer, Microsoft also offers an online document viewer integrated with its Office Online suite. Microsoft’s online document viewer supports only Office Document formats, while on the other hand Google’s Drive Viewer supports tons of file formats including PDF, HTML, ZIP etc.

There are several benefits of using these online viewers. First of all, you don’t need to have any specific software installed on your computer. Moreover, it is safe to open possibly vulnerable files on remote computers/servers.

“Open with Office Online” extension

We have created a small, useful and light-weight Chrome extension for the users of Microsoft Office Online. Install this extension from Chrome Web Store. After successful installation, you should visit this test page which has links to sample online Office files. Right click on any link and you should notice an option “Open with Office Online” in the context menu, as shown in the following screenshot.

Click on that option, and you will be directed to the Office Online Viewer where you can view that file. Similarly, you can view any online and publicly accessible DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, PPS, XLS or XLSX file. You can directly save the opened files to your OneDrive account.

    @Ashit: Thanks for installing this extension. Now that you’ve installed it, right click on any link pointing to Word, PowerPoint or Excel file. You should notice extension’s option in the context menu like in the above screenshot. Click on it to open that file with Microsoft’s Office Online Viewer;

    I have my most-frequented files in Google Drive, and downloaded Office for the Desktop (I’m on an iMac, btw) and added the Office Online extension to my Chrome browser. How can I open the documents in my Drive in the Office Online program? I right-click on them but “Office Online” isn’t an option. What am I missing?

    Do you think you could make an extension to use it? I tried to found one in chrome store but i couldn’t found it.
